Mosley rewrites Big Ned marks in
51-25 win

NEDERLAND —
When Micah Mosley reflects on his superb
high school football career, Nederland’s senior tailback can remember he
saved his most productive night at Bulldog Stadium for his grand finale.
Rambling through Lumberton’s defense for his
personal career-high of 406 yards on 28 carries, with four touchdowns,
Mosley merely became the greatest single-season and career rusher in
Nederland’s long and storied football history.
Micah passed them all. Move over Steve
Fleming. Move over Troy Sumrall. Move over Ross LaBove. Make room at the
top for Mosley.
About the only one he didn’t pass was
Silsbee’s Jay McGuire, who rushed for 424 yards against Nederland at
Bulldog Stadium in 1993. That’s believed to be the Southeast Texas
single game record.
Running Nederland’s counter gap play to
perfection, the 6-1, 200-pound senior darted 55 yards on his final
Bulldog Stadium carry, capping the Bulldogs’ 51-25 playoff-clinching
victory over Lumberton before around 5,000 on Nederland’s old English
‘N’.
Let me tell you something, the Big Ned ‘N’
will miss this young man very much.
The victory clinched Nederland’s return to a
school-record 11th straight bidistrict playoff appearance. The Dogs
(5-5) will be the home team next Saturday night against Galena Park
(8-2) in the 4A Division I bidistrict round in Baytown’s Stallworth
Stadium at 7 p.m.
Ticket details will not be finalized until
early next week.
Limited to only 92 yards by a sneaky fast
Dayton defense last week, Mosley ripped out 159 by the end of this
night’s first quarter and scored on touchdown runs of 64, 1, 56 and 55
yards.
His able-bodied escorts, led by the
outstanding left tackle performance of senior Joe Isbell, refused to
allow Mosley to be trapped for negative yardage on any of his 28
carries.
For the record, let’s look at the record
book because Micah rewrote it on Friday night. His 406 yards surpassed
his previous single-game high of 318 at Waller. That’s the most in a
single game ever for a Nederland rusher.
Then there’s Mosley’s new 10-game season
total — 2,010. Ross LaBove rushed for 1,897 yards over 13 games in 1999.
Troy Sumrall dashed for 1,601 in a 12-game season in 1997. Stop the
presses, Micah’s not done yet.
