NEDERLAND —
Nederland fans who made the trip to Houston
for last week’s game saw a glimpse of senior Micah Mosley’s big-play
capabilities.
Forest Brook received the complete picture
as Mosley scored four touchdowns in leading the Bulldogs to a 44-6 rout
of the Wildcats Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.
Nederland (1-0), which was limited to just
four first downs against LaMarque, exceeded that total before the end of
the first quarter. The Bulldogs amassed 547 yards of total offense and
scored on their first seven possessions.
Mosley did most of the damage on the ground,
running for 284 yards on 26 carries. Quarterback Alex Moshier was solid
throwing the ball, completing 11-of-20 passes, including his first seven
attempts in the game, for 183 yards.
Not to be outdone was Nederland’s defense,
which held Forest Brook to just two first downs and 32 yards of total
offense in the opening half.
“What we wanted to do tonight was execute
better than we did against LaMarque,” said Nederland coach Larry
Neumann. “I haven’t seen the video to diagnose every play, but my
suspicion is, generally, that we executed better. That means we lined up
on the right guy and blocked him. Last week, we played hard, but we
didn’t always get on the right guy and we didn’t always block him.
“I think the grades will be better on both
sides of the ball this week. I’m proud of the way we played tonight. I
hope we are going in the right direction and I believe we are.”
Mosley had five runs of 30 yards or more in
the game. After scoring on a 6-yard run, his next two scoring scampers
were from 40 and 71 yards, respectively. He also added a 25-yard
touchdown reception from Moshier.
“Mosley is starting to show some
explosiveness and runaway speed, which is good to see,” Neumann said.
“You have to give credit to the offensive line for making the holes, but
you can see him (Mosley) getting more confidence and now he expects to
break that long run when he gets to the line of scrimmage.
“Obviously, we need to be more diversified
on offense and we were tonight. Alex (Moshier) was on target and our
receivers ran good routes and made some real good catches. Part of our
goal was to throw the ball more tonight and to be productive doing it. I
think we accomplished that in the first half.”
Leading 31-0, Nederland took the second half
kickoff and needed just six plays to score. Mosley carried the ball of
five of those plays culminating with a 40-yard TD run.
After the defense forced a Forest Brook
punt, Nederland needed just three plays to put up its final points of
the night. Mosley carried three straight times, the last of which went
for a 71-yard scoring run.
Forest Brook (0-1) finally broke through
against the second string defense late in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Latron Thomas scored on a 24-yard TD run to make the score
44-6.
“I feel pretty good about what we specified
we need to get better at in three days of practice this week,” said
Neumann. “If you can do that every week, than eventually you’re going to
be a better football team. Again, without having seen the video, I think
we accomplished what we wanted to do in a week’s span.”
Neumann was also quick to point out the play
of his defense, especially the guys up front.
