Mosley, Moshier keep ‘Dogs barking
DAUCY CRIZER
The Port Arthur News
NEDERLAND —
Running back Micah Mosley gets most of the
attention for Nederland, but quarterback Alex Moshier proved the
Bulldogs are anything but one dimensional Friday night.
Moshier completed 8-of-16 passes for 176
yards and three touchdowns as Nederland built a big lead and cruised to
a 35-16 win over Ozen at Bulldog Stadium.
That’s not to say that Mosley didn’t turn in
his usual outstanding performance. He led all rushers with 181 yards on
23 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 73
yards and a touchdown.
“I’m really proud of the way we came out and
played tonight,” said Nederland coach Larry Neumann. “We talked all week
about coming out with a business-like attitude and coming out and
playing hard and we did. I thought our focus was real good.
“The second half was lackluster to say the
least. I don’t think any of us feel real good about that, but that might
not be a bad thing. We’ve got another challenge next week. They’re a
little upset about the way they played in the second half. I think with
all of us having that kind of bad feeling it may motivate us to work
hard play two good halves next week.”
Nederland (3-4, 2-2) wasted little time in
getting the scoring started. Mosley, known more for his running ability,
slipped behind the secondary for a 49-yard touchdown pass from Moshier
on the game’s third play from scrimmage.
After forcing an Ozen punt, the Bulldogs
scored on their next possession. Mosley carried three times for 47 yards
on the drive, the last tote covering 33 yards. Moshier hit Josh Cabra in
the back, right corner of end zone for a 28-yard TD to give Nederland a
14-0 lead.
“The line did a great job and the receivers
ran good routes which made my job easy,” said a modest Moshier. “We saw
some weak spots in their (Panthers) defense and we just tried to take
advantage of that as best we could. They, and everyone, keys on Micah
(Mosley) because he’s such a great athlete, but it’s nice to throw the
ball every now and then.”
The Panthers drove down to the Nederland 10.
However, three straight running plays left Ozen with fourth-and-five.
Jimmie Johnson converted a 22-yard field goal on the first play of the
second quarter to make the score 14-3.
Nederland wasted little time in answering
the Panthers’ score. On the very next play from scrimmage, Mosley raced
off left tackle 65 yards for the first of two opening half TD’s. He
added a 6-yard scoring run on the Bulldog’s next possession that pushed
the lead to 28-3.
“Micah practiced better this week,” Neumann
said of Mosley’s nagging leg injury. “You can see him getting each week.
He still gimps around a little bit, but it’s subtle. He’s not 100
percent, I can tell you that, but he’s closing in out it.”
Ozen kept fighting as quarterback London
Durham connected with Herbert Labove on a 29-yard scoring strike to pull
the Panthers within 28-10.
