Mosley’s Mayhem Not EnoughFor Nederland fans who were fortunate enough to make the long 2-½ hour drive to Waller on Friday, the game that ensued between the two teams is one for the record books. Although the outcome of the battle is not what Nederland was hoping for, these Bulldogs have no reason to hang their heads. Going into Friday night against a University of Texas committed running back, Colton Johnson, Nederland’s defense knew they were in for a battle. Nederland was hoping to contain Johnson enough to allow Nederland to maintain possession and allow Mosley to work his magic. He certainly did that to the tune of 313 rushing yards and 4 touchdowns. Nederland’s defense however was unable to stop Johnson allowing him to shadow Mosley with 342 yards and 5 touchdowns. Nederland seemed to be slightly in control during halftime with a 24-19 lead. The second half was an offensive see-saw, with most of the action surrounding the two running backs. Nederland was leading late in the game after a 54-yard scamper by Mosley, making the score a close 38-34. Nederland needed a miracle to stop Johnson, but his immense speed and strength was too much and Johnson was able to punch in another touchdown with over a minute and a half remaining. Nederland regained possession with one timeout remaining. The play calling at this point by Nederland was in my opinion, just not smart. With plenty enough time on the clock and one timeout, running the ball is still an option. Nederland chose to pass four downs in a row instead of allowing Mosley at least one chance to run. Mosley was averaging nearly ten yards per carry and to deny a another shot at a long run was just not smart play calling, especially when Waller kept their defensive backs away from the line of scrimmage in order to defend the passing game. Nederland was unable to connect on four straight downs and the game was close to over at that point. Nederland now has an extra week to prepare for district with a bye week. Nederland will travel to Vidor to take on the Pirates on September 29th. By this time, Nederland should be able to bring back some key injured players, allowing more diversity on the field.
