Back to the Drawing Boards After 49-28 Loss to West BrookOn possibly the best night of Coach Craig Stumps career, the Bruins of West Brook shined brilliantly. The West Brook offense exploded Friday night in big plays. The Bruins averaged over 9 yards per carry on the ground and over 20 yards per pass. Junior quarterback Joe Chaisson was incredible going 10 for 13 and throwing for over 200 yards. Missed opportunities once again prove to be fatal against the ‘Dogs. Nederland jumped ahead 7-0 after a 6-yard touchdown run by Danny Nguyen. Nederland continued to look promising after recovering a West Brook fumble at the Bruin eight-yard line late in the first quarter. Nederland however was unable to punch it in and instead fumbled right back to West Brook. Momentum swings are crucial, as we’ve seen for two weeks now. After Nederland’s first touchdown, West Brook scored 35 unanswered points in the second and third quarters. Although there may be some disappointment in the eyes of the fans, there is certainly no need to panic. There are several things we have to consider before we start casting losing season predictions (not that anyone is). First off the season just began. Granted the ‘Dogs are now 1-2, but this team will grow and get better as the season progresses. This is much unlike teams such as La Marque who will be just as good in pre-district as they will be in the playoffs. Also we have to remember that the teams that have beaten us have a combined record of 6-0, not too shabby. Early season injuries have taken some key players out as well, most noticeably Mosley and Mohica. Neumann has well been known for his classic ‘peaking teams.’ Once Nederland is healthy and this team becomes tighter, the ‘Dogs will be a tough team to beat. Neumann’s clan will be prepared for Friendswood next week. Look for new adjustments and possibly new personnel over the next few weeks as Nederland attempts to place players in the right positions to benefit the team the most. Bring the noise this week (i.e. air horns, propane tanks, cowbells etc.). We need a crowd this week and the fans need to be there to turn this season around a bit. Brandon Corley |
