‘Dogs Get Revenge in Double OT 34-27

Nobody could have predicted the ensemble that occurred in Bulldog Stadium Friday night. Sure, we knew it would be a close and hard fought game, but not one that would be decided in double overtime. Nederland’s stamina shows that conditioning is crucial in the 4th quarter (and OT). So, exactly how big is this win? A win over Friendswood was not only important for this team’s confidence, but it is a huge momentum burst heading into District 20-4A against Central next week. Coach Neumann explains, “To make some plays like we did is going to give us confidence when we get into those kind of situations in the future, and the future of district is next week.”

With three very crucial players back in action (Mosley, Mohica, Stukey), a healthy Bulldog team stops the ink pens of the sports writers after two tough losses in a row.  Mosley’s first start of the season turned into 24 carries for 117 yards and a very important touchdown in the first OT. Mohica, even when getting double and triple teamed at times, had a great game along with Stukey. This game did not, however, revolve around these three returning players injuries. Everyone saw a TEAM effort last night, perhaps equal to, if not exceeding that of the Texas City game. Moshier connected on several great passes including a 78-yard bomb to Whitaker and another 37-yard strike to Garrett Butler. Moshier was 9 for 19 on the night with 218 yards and no interceptions.

Although Nederland avoided any interceptions, fumbles seemed to haunt the offense all night. With 5 fumbles on the night and only 2 recovered, this game could have been over sooner than it was. We can be certain that ball handling as well as defending misdirection plays will be worked on this week in a very important game that kicks off district play. I asked Coach Neumann if there was any thought on going for it at the end of regulation instead of getting the easy 3 and going into overtime, considering what happened last year. His response, “It was there for about a second, until I thought about our crowd and the intensity our players had. So I said lets get the 3 and take it to them in OT.”
